As areas become more and more developed, retention ponds are often needed to help with the large volumes of water that come with run-off from rain storms or melting snow.

Whenever an area is developed, it changes the natural pattern of how water is distributed in the area. Retention ponds were developed to help with this problem. When changing the landscape due to building roads, houses or other structures, the ability of the ground to absorb water is reduced. Concrete does not absorb water, leaving standing water that becomes a major hazard quickly. Flooding on highways and in neighborhoods can be the result of the grounds inability to absorb the water. Retention ponds are made in order to direct this excess water to a temporary holding place. Retention ponds can also fill up, and overflow areas need to be made to drain the water to an appropriate and safe place.
Retention ponds are made in a variety of sizes depending on the area and needed capacity for water storage. Engineers determine the needed size and how the retention pond will affect the surrounding area if it becomes too full. Some retention ponds are made as part of an environment. These retention ponds hold water for longer periods of time and often can become an area for wildlife. Grass and other plants are sometimes integrated into the scenery around the retention ponds, giving it a true pond feel. Geese and other water fowl often congregate in these areas; and this in turn attracts foxes and other predators.
As a result of concerns that wildlife could become a problem in some developed areas, retention ponds can be surrounded by fencing to prevent humans and animals entrance. There are sometimes concerns too, that children will drown in the retention ponds. Some of these ponds can get very deep, it is always important to explain the dangers to children.
Another concern is the mosquito population that finds these areas a favorite breeding ground. The water in the retention ponds is usually stagnant, which is why the mosquito prefers these areas. There are diseases that are carried by mosquitoes, and eliminating their breeding grounds has become an issue for some communities.
Retention ponds are a necessity to prevent flooding in developed communities. Incorporating them into the environment allows for the retention pond to be a natural habitat; but, caution needs to be used to keep it a safe place.
